Hosted at the VMFA – a Nashville-style Musicians Round is a concert featuring three or more musicians who will each play 3 or 4 songs in turn in a round-robin format. The focus is on the song itself more than the performance with each musician sharing a brief story behind the song. This year’s musicians are:

Koli Kohler:

Being a descendant of the Hupa, Yurok, and Karuk tribes of Northern California, Koli comes from a long line of storytellers. Koli has been nominated for six Native American Music Awards in 2019 and 2022 which include Female Artist of the Year, Single of the Year, and Best Folk Album.

Darren Thompson:

Darren Thompson is an Ojibwe flute player from the Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe Indian Reservation in northern Wisconsin. His dedication to the preservation of American Indian music has taken him to some of North America’s most prominent American Indian organizations and events. Highly acclaimed for his genuine sound, Darren earned a nomination from the Native American Music Awards for “Flutist of the Year” in 2016 for his album “Between Earth and Sky”!

Suni Sonqo Vizcarra Wood:

(Quechua Nation, Peru) Wood is an artist born in Taos, NM and raised in the southern Andes of Peru in the Sacred Valley of the Incas of Cusco. Suni will be playing traditional songs from his homeland with flutes, drums, and rattles.

The Survival Story of the Patawomeck Tribe of Virginia told through the lives of two women. The survival story of the Patawomeck Tribe of Virginia has been remembered within the tribe for generations, but the massacre of Patawomeck men and the enslavement of women and children by land hungry colonists in 1666 has been mostly unknown outside of the tribe until now.

SPECIAL PERFORMANCE:
Master of Ceremonies Sam BearPaw is a Champion PowWow Dancer. The Sinquah Family, Moontee Sinquah and his two sons, Sampson Sixkiller, and Scott Sixkiller are deep rooted in their culture and traditions. The trio are members of the Hopi, Tewa, and Choctaw nations from the Hopi nations located in Northern Arizona. Their goal in all they do is to inspire and create art through music, dance and storytelling. The Sinquah’s are all World Champion Hoop Dancers.
